Nintendo shocked the gaming world with the unexpected announcement that a Breath of the Wild sequel is in the works for the Nintendo switch. The short first look video showed a much darker tone from the first game and a short snippet of Hyrule Castle rising from it’s foundations.
The teaser left us with more unanswered questions. I think most are pondering whether Nintendo will be utilizing the same Hyrule from Breath or will the team be creating a new world from the ground up.
We have confirmation that it will be the former. Speaking to Game Informer, Aonuma discusses why they have decided to develop a sequel with the main reason being wanting to revisit the same Hyrule and world again.
“One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story,”
Despite being set in the same world, I think it would be reasonable expect new content and a reworked Hyrule that distinguishes itself from the first. Nintendo isn’t going to recycle a game completely.
