There has been a clear shift in paradigm in the Super Smash Bros franchise recently. It was once a series that celebrated all things Nintendo, a love letter to all Ninty fans, gathering all their iconic characters into one game and making them beat the heck out of each other.
However recently, the franchise has moved away from primary being a Nintendo-centered crossover becoming more of a celebration of gaming biggest faces, now including mascots from 3rd party publishers. In Brawl, Sonic and Snake joined the cast and soon after a flood gate opened with Pac-man, Ryu, Bayonetta, Cloud and Simon just to name a few all joining the fray.
And now with a left-field pick in Joker from Persona 5 announced as the first DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the possibilities for the remaining 4 DLC fighters have just widen.
Going on a hunch (backed with sound reasoning), I believe Sora from the Kingdom Hearts series will be included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as one of the DLC packs.
It goes without saying, Sora is among gaming’s most recognizable and famous faces. The protagonist of the highly acclaimed and much loved Kingdom Hearts series, many gamers have grown up with Sora and have in turn seen him grow and develop into a spectacular hero across several games. Backed by an endearing legacy, Sora encompasses what Super Smash Bros. currents represents and would fit perfectly alongside the cast.
Moreover given the action-packed nature of the kingdom hearts and the skillsets provided to Sora would make for an interesting play-style. Equipped with the Keyblade and all the magical perks that come with it, Sora would most definitely be a capable fighter and could provide a unique play-style that the series has never seen before.
However, the only roadblock I can see regarding Sora’s inclusion is Disney. I have no doubt that Sqaure Enix would allow Sora’s in Smash, but catching the essence of Kingdom Hearts would be difficult or next to impossible without Disney’s IP. Stages, Music, final smashes and other Kingdom heart relative assets would be hard to produce without the green light from Disney and I suspect negotiations would be an involved process that may not be worth all the effort. Forgoing Disney altogether would be a great disservice to Sora and the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Only time will tell whether may prediction comes true, but I am fairly confident that Sora will make his debut in Ultimate. What do are your thoughts? Do you believe Sora will be included? Let me know in the comment section below.
