The competition in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is fierce. Online races are frantic, exhilarating and occasionally frustrating. Nothing beats the thrill and adrenaline of the last desperate dash towards the finish line. Very few games can replicate the rush and ecstasy of Mario kart, it is a major reason why the series is so incredibly endearing.
Success in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe largely comes down to skill. It is impossible to control the elements of luck that may ultimately impede your podium finish. However, you can give yourself the best chance of winning by selecting the right combinations of character class, vehicles, wheels and gliders coupled with smart driving. Now, I don’t profess to be the best Mario Kart player in the world. I would like to believe that I am a consistent Mario Karter. I’m that one person you see online who is consistently at the top of the ladder after each race.
If you are struggling a bit online and are need of some guidance, perhaps I can be of some service to you, particularly when selecting the right combinations online.
Picking the right Character
To avoid over-complicating matters, characters are general broken down into three weight classes: light, medium and heavy’s. Each weight class has there own advantages and disadvantages, and in my opinion are all viable options online. In simplified terms, Lights are slower, easier to handle, quicker to reach top speed but are easily knocked around. Mediums offer more rounded performance on the tracks. Meanwhile, heavies are faster, not easily pushed around but more difficult to handle.
Personally speaking, I tend to lean towards light and and medium weights as the offer more consistency. I’m not too fond of the slower acceleration of the heavy’s especially considering races often become a bloodbath with shells flying everywhere. However, pick your favorite and take advantage of their strengths and overcome their disadvantages.
Streetle + Cyber Slim + Plane Glider
If you looking for a combination that will serve you well in almost all conditions and tracks, then look no forward than this. The Streetle has excellent handling, great acceleration and impressive Mini turbo. It’s ease of control and good acceleration provides a level of consistency that is essential online. I personally like to pair it with a medium weight for the perfect balance. However, this set does not have the pure speed so it can be difficult to make ground with a player with a sizable lead.
Circuit Special + Cyber Slim + Plane Glider
There are many ways to play this combination. Couple it with a heavy and go for pure speed to maintain a strong lead but careful of the poor handling. Or use a medium/light to balance it’s disadvantages. I personally like using this combination with a light weight. The high speed of the Circuit special and the Cyber slim provides lights with additional speed, while the good handling of the lights offsets the relatively poor handling of the Circuit Special.
Comet/Yoshi Bike + Cyber Slim + Plane Glider
If you are looking for a bike that resembles the overpowered Mach Bike from Mario kart Wii. While it does not have the speed boost of the Mach, the the Comet/Yoshi Bike does have the capabilities to inside Drift, has good acceleration and excellent handling. This set is a well rounded and a good introductory to the Sports variants of bike. I always almost use this combination for Moo Moo Meadows and Ice Ice Post.
Sport Bike/Master Cycle/ + Cyber Slim + Plane Glider
This set is for the more experienced players able to master the difficult controls Sports bike class. This set resembles more closely to the Mach Bike than the previous set. Coupled with speed and in drifting this set is highly effective when mastered.
